No home remedy reliably dissolves all kidney stones quickly. Common calcium stones do not simply melt away after drinking lemon water, vinegar or herbal tea.

Some uric acid stones can dissolve with prescribed treatment that changes urine chemistry. That requires medical assessment and monitoring—not a general “kidney flush.”

The first step is understanding whether your stone needs dissolution treatment, time to pass, or a procedure.

Dissolving, Passing and Breaking a Stone Are Different

These terms are often mixed together in home-remedy advertisements.

ProcessWhat it means
DissolvingChemically reducing a stone through a suitable treatment.
PassingA stone moves through the urinary tract and leaves in urine.
FragmentingA medical procedure breaks a stone into smaller pieces.

A small stone can pass without dissolving. Likewise, fragments passing after shock-wave treatment do not demonstrate that a drink dissolved them.

If a stone passes after someone tries a remedy, that timing alone cannot establish that the remedy caused it.

Which Kidney Stones Can Dissolve?

Uric acid stones are the main type considered for oral dissolution treatment. Clinicians may prescribe alkaline citrate or sodium bicarbonate to make urine less acidic.

Treatment needs a suitable urine-pH target and follow-up. Raising pH excessively can encourage calcium phosphate stones, so more alkalinity is not automatically better.

Calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate stones are not ordinarily dissolved through this approach. Other stone types require their own specialist plans.

Your clinician may use stone analysis, imaging and urine findings to decide whether dissolution is appropriate.

Read our kidney stone types guide and uric acid stone article for more detail.

Can Anything Dissolve a Stone Overnight?

There is no dependable overnight home treatment.

Even when prescribed dissolution is appropriate, there is no universal completion time. Your clinician needs to assess whether the stone is responding and whether continuing treatment remains suitable.

Be cautious about claims promising that a drink will remove every stone within hours or a fixed number of days.

Ask these questions instead:

  • Is my stone likely to respond to dissolution?
  • How will progress be checked?
  • When should I return for assessment?
  • What findings would mean I need another treatment?

What About Lemon, Vinegar and Herbal Drinks?

A drink’s contribution to hydration is different from evidence that it dissolves an existing stone. Likewise, research about preventing future stones does not prove treatment of a current obstruction.

Our individual guides examine these claims:

Do not substitute a homemade mixture for prescribed dissolution medication.

If you explore the Kidney Stone Removal Report, discuss any proposed treatment routine with your clinician before following it.

Will Drinking Extra Water Force the Stone Out?

Adequate hydration matters, but forcing large amounts of fluid during an acute attack is not an established way to speed passage.

A Cochrane review found insufficient reliable evidence supporting high-volume fluids or diuretics for acute ureteric colic. This does not mean you should deliberately become dehydrated; it means that “drink more until it flushes out” is not a proven treatment.

Follow your individual fluid advice. If vomiting prevents you from keeping drinks down, seek medical assessment.

For prevention targets and fluid restrictions, see how much water to drink for kidney stones.

When Can a Stone Be Managed at Home?

Some small stones can pass without a procedure. A clinician may recommend observation, appropriate pain treatment and follow-up.

However, size alone does not establish that home management is safe. Symptoms, location, blockage, infection and kidney function also matter.

If you are advised to wait for passage:

  • Follow the prescribed symptom-management plan.
  • Ask whether to use a strainer to collect the stone.
  • Keep the agreed follow-up appointment.
  • Know which symptoms require urgent reassessment.

Do not cancel follow-up simply because a remedy seemed helpful.

When Is Medical Treatment Needed?

Stones that are too large to pass, block urine flow or cause significant problems may require removal or fragmentation.

Options can include shock-wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy or other procedures, depending on the stone and the patient.

These treatments should not be described as unnecessary merely because a home remedy is available. The aim is to resolve the stone while protecting kidney function.

Our pain-relief guide explains the limits of supportive measures.

Seek Urgent Help for These Symptoms

Get urgent medical assessment for suspected kidney stone symptoms with:

  • Fever or chills.
  • An inability to urinate, or only passing a very small amount.
  • Severe or uncontrolled pain.
  • Persistent vomiting.

Do not wait for a drink, herb or supplement to work when these symptoms occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a 5 mm stone dissolve naturally?

Size does not determine whether a stone can dissolve. Composition matters. Some small stones pass without dissolving.

Does baking soda dissolve every type of stone?

No. Sodium bicarbonate has a role in selected, medically supervised treatment. It is not a universal home remedy.

Is stone passage proof that a remedy worked?

No. A stone may have passed naturally. A personal experience cannot establish the remedy’s effect.

Should I combine several remedies for faster results?

There is no established reason to expect a combination to work faster. Do not replace your treatment plan with multiple unverified preparations.

Can prevention advice remove a stone I already have?

Prevention and treatment have different goals. A plan that reduces future risk does not necessarily remove an existing stone.
